Artist Statement

Photography has been described as the most democratic arts form – anyone with a camera can produce images. In my work with children and adults of all ages and different backgrounds, I have found that giving them a camera and helping them to use it empowers them to document and capture their environment. The results are used in many creative processes, for example, as the basis for designs of other works of art, as documentaries, as collations of ideas and techniques or simply as art. Combine this with my other creative interests in poetry, and many senses are encouraged together.

As senior partner of Red House Associates, I carry out press, advertising and documentary photography for clients which include newspapers and magazines, companies in manufacturing and retail as well as pr companies, universities, colleges, schools and local authorities. I am also employed as a community arts photographer by a number of local authorities and community organisations.

I work with a number of community and arts groups using photography to ‘unlock’ creativity in children and adults. I have then helped them use their photographs in a variety of creative processes to produce a number of landmark pieces of art kept in the locality for posterity. By learning and developing their photographic skills, they have been empowered to ‘own’ the final work. Many of my projects have been in collaboration with other artists to produce multi-media outcomes.

While I have maintained an interest in photography since childhood, in 1992, I decided to train professionally and developed photographic work as part of my career. Documentary work has grown out of this. Following extensive travel through the western USA in the 1980s and 1990s, I wrote and produced “An American Journey”, a photo-documentary about the contrasts found in pursuit of the American Dream across the western states of the USA. Since then, I have exhibited several works around the country, most recently Summer 2005 at The Edinburgh Festival with “An Hour at The Fringe” a photo-documentary showing the weird, exuberant and downright bizarre happenings during an afternoon at The Edinburgh Fringe.

I use both colour and black and white, on film and digital and use Apple Mac systems in pre-print production of publications, including image manipulation (Adobe Photoshop).

My work is increasingly in the field of social documentary where I combine both my writing and photographic skills. My particular interests are:

* The interaction of rural and urban lifestyles
* Women and children
* Travel and tourism
