“Motown’s abandonment was planned and encouraged by federal policy”- Coleman Young, mayor 1974-1994
What happened to the city of Detroit is not unique. The city is mired in the decay that defines it in the national consciousness. This group of photographs is an examination of many things, the failure of an industry, the loss of a city and the devastation of an economy. The abandonment found in these damaged landscapes serves as silent sentries to our neglect.
The oversaturated unnatural colors found in these images are an aesthetic choice, an influence taken from picture postcards. Sadly these are postcards that speak to a different concern, the demise of a great city.
My photographs are a visual investigation of the damage our culture is wreaking on the planet we all inhabit. There is a sense of surreality in these places, once so vital and now abandoned and left to the elements. The imagery is intense and stark and completely unnatural, the perceptible tension created is intentional. My intention is to raise awareness of what our culture allows to occur right beneath our feet.
