City Limits
IRIS was invited to curate an exhibition, to coincide with the CITY LIMITS conference at Staffordshire University in September 1996.
This show was selected, both from the resource and through advertisements in Artist's Newsletter and Art Monthly.
It included the following artists:
Michelle Henning, Debbie Humphry, Karen Ingham, Bjanka Kadic, Alexandra McGlynn, Rosy Martin, Esther Sayers, Magda Segal, Jacqueline Swift & Nick Lowe, Emanuelle Waeckerle and Elizabeth Williams.
The work dealt with a wide range of issues related to themes, icons and stories of urban life, communities, cultures, migrations and marginalisations. These themes were elaborated through photographic media as diverse as black and white, colour, slide / video installation, montage, performance and multimedia.
The exhibition was open to the public from 12 September to 2 October 1996, with a large fine art exhibition in the studio next door.

Nexus vol 1 Engendering the city, Art historian Dr Marsha Meskimmon explores the exhibition curated by IRIS for CITY LIMITS, in terms of a singularly pedestrian and involved (female) experience of the city, which she opposes to that of the 'flaneur', or (male) detached stroller.
